More photos from the Lighthouse Trail: continued from last
entry . . .
More colorful canyon walls (above and
below)
Castle Peak (L) and Lighthouse Peak (R)
farther along the trail
Getting closer, above. Jim called
down to me from just right of the Lighthouse.
End of the line for most folks, who turn
around when they come to the
picnic table and bike rack under the trees
-- it's a steep climb from there.
View toward the south from the first
plateau on the 300' climb to the Lighthouse.
Jim sits at the base of one pinnacle as he
waits for Cody and me to climb up to the formation (above),
then walks over to the Lighthouse formation
on the right (below)
Scenic view to the east of the Lighthouse
Jim pretends to push over the Lighthouse.
Jim begins the first descent from the
Lighthouse (above and below).
View from on high: the Lighthouse
Trail winds through the canyon below us.
On the lower descent, I had to slide on my
butt in a couple steep places
with loose sand and rock to protect my
Granny Knees but I got back down OK.
Going up is much easier for me. Jim and Cody got
down much faster!
Above and below: more colorful canyon
walls on the way back to the trailhead
Back around Capitol Peak
We really enjoyed that run/hike and can highly recommend it to
others who visit Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
Spring is a beautiful time to enjoy the canyon because the
flowers are blooming, the new leaves have come out, and the
temperatures aren't too high yet. The other seasons have their charms,
however.
Next entry: on the road to New Mexico -- a change in plans shortens our visit to
Palo Duro Canyon
Happy trails,
