In the fourth mile there are more views of Pike's Peak and its northern
shoulder.
The mountain looks much closer now. It's not all that far as the crow
flies, but there are still
eight or nine miles to go on the trail because of the way it
twists and turns:
Another of my favorite spots is a little bit farther up, probably in
the fifth mile:
Those rocks have some of the most scenic views of the peak.
CONTINUING UP THE TRAIL IN MILES 5 & 6:
Although the trail remains mostly smoother and flatter in the last
part of this section, there are also some rockier spots where you need
to watch your footing (or bike line):
There are more interesting big rocks, too:
Nearing Barr Camp there are lots of pines and a few
aspens to shade the trail:
I turned around just before Barr Camp, after reaching 10,013 feet
elevation.
I took the remaining photos on the way back down:
As I descended I often had expansive views into the
valley below. It's easier to take pictures toward the east (Colorado
Springs) when the sun is higher in the sky.
You'll see more photos of the valley as I hike farther and farther
down the trail.
